Who are you?
I’m Adam Nicholson. I’m originally from Texas and grew up in North Carolina.
I’m passionate about the recreational pursuits of climbing high peaks (as well as skiing and biking those peaks, and paddling the rivers and lakes between them) and placing small groups on distant targets.
By day I’m a professional fundraiser and get to talk with some of the most interesting and generous men and women in America.
By weekend I enjoy exploring the most rugged and spectacular places in this country.
My guilty pleasure snack is tortilla chips and salsa.
If you’d like to know more just ask.
Why are you writing this journal?
I want to document my recreational pursuits and evaluate my progress.
I enjoy sharing stories from my adventures and inspiring others to join me.
I want to pass on the lessons learned I’ve learned from years of amateur climbing and competitive shooting.
What sort of posts will you share?
Stories from backpacking, climbing, ski mountaineering, and canoe camping trips; and reports from range days and shooting competitions.
I’m busy so my goal is to keep these posts short, informative, and engaging.
What is the connection between mountains and marksmanship?
None, except that I’m passionate about both.
However, there are a few reasons I enjoy these two distinct pursuits.
In particular, both climbing and shooting entail adventure and the pursuit of excellence.
Adventure, understood as the risk of the unknown. Planning is essential, but no plan can prepare for every challenge in the mountains or on the range.
The pursuit of excellence, because there is always room for improvement and the feedback in both pursuits is immediate and often frustrating, occasionally satisfying, always educational.
I aspire to backcountry hunting for elk, bear, and big horn sheep, and when that happens I’ll have a formal nexus for these hobbies.
Will I learn how to be a strong mountaineer or top marksman?
Not on account of my virtuosity. I’ll be content if I inspire someone else to spend time in the mountains or on the range, and hopefully surpass my skills.
Will I at least be entertained?
That’s the goal. Use the comments to hold me accountable.
